History

Our group was created in its original form, called “Gap Year Network,” and approved by the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students in 2011. The original cofounders were Lelabari Giwa, Gaya Morris, Agnes Cho, Cole Freeman and Emmiliese von Clemm. They increased awareness on campus and among high schools about the benefits of taking a gap year before starting college.

In the fall of 2013, Eden Full and Jose Lopez reimagined and revitalized the group, with a broader mission of serving and bringing together all types of students who take time off. Jose and Eden led the creation of large parts of our Extended Leave Report and the content on this website. Jose and Eden partnered with Shawon Jackson, then-USG president, along with a USG task force including Azza Cohen, Sol Taubin and Katherine Clifton to collect data on students’ experiences and generate the Extended Leave Report, available on the USG website.

Recently we have focused on community-building events including receptions, dinners and study breaks. We’re committed to continuing to grow and innovate as a group!
